Reading is a complex cognitive process of decoding symbols in order to construct or derive meaning (reading comprehension). It is a means of language acquisition, of communication, and of sharing information and ideas. Like all language, it is a complex interaction between the text and the reader which is shaped by the reader’s prior knowledge, experiences, attitude, and language community which is culturally and socially situated. The reading process requires continuous practice, development, and refinement.


DEVELOPING READING SKILL

Education plays an integral part in the overall development of the personality. The Government has come up with unique steps to make primary education compulsory for all. In simple words, elementary education implies eight years of compulsory schooling that begins from the age of six. The government ensures to make elementary education free and compulsory.


The Constitution of India had guaranteed free and compulsory education for all children until the age of 14 years under Article 45. This remained unfulfilled till the Right to Education (RTE) Act was passed by Parliament in August 2009. However, the implementation of this Act has left many contentious issues pertaining to quality, equity, access and adequacy of resources unresolved.


PROCESS OF READING SKILLS

The burning crisis that grips every youth is the poor reading comprehension ability. At the same time there is a remarkable increase in the browsing of information. Reading is the process of thinking, evaluating, judging and imaging. This refers to the process of identification of symbols and figures and giving appropriate association and meaning. Reading includes two basic processes of decoding and comprehension. The decoding process involves resilience on using words, phonological structure, understanding the phonemegraphime relationships and translating printed words into representations of similar to oral language. The decoding skill enables the reader to pronounce words correctly.


Comprehension skills enable the learner to understand the meaning of words in isolation and in context. Reading is a process of recognizing and understanding words and ideals. It helps in understanding the general organization, reading content and related sub-skills.

Reading is the one of the best habits that one can cultivate in his lifetime. It is the best hobby a person can ever have. By reading a person has nothing to lose but one can gain tons of knowledge from it. In today’s world parents should encourage their children to improve their reading habit, but most parents don’t have time for this.


But in reality it’s a big task and responsibility of parents to imply their children to cultivate reading habit. In stories which our Grandma had told us, we have heard that suddenly God came in front of a person and gave all knowledge in a day. We are not so lucky these days to see God in front of us to grant us all knowledge in a day. We can gain knowledge only step by step and Reading plays a big part in it.


Start reading one page a day, two pages on the second day, three pages on the other day, and five pages after a week. After two months you will be surprised about your reading limit and you can easily read 10 pages per hour.


Reading increases our knowledge and helps us to know many new things. It improves concentration and focus thereby helping one to achieve his dream with more confidence. Reading increases our vocabulary knowledge. Many times we learn new words while reading. Reading creates awareness about the happenings around the world. Reading increases reasoning skill with the knowledge you gain.
